MHLA Announces 2019-20 Board of Directors
The 2019 MHLA Nominating Committee Report was voted on and approved at the Annual Meeting at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport on June 7, 2019. We are pleased to welcome the following new Board Members:

Katarina Burns, Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center
Linda Westgate, The Hotel at the University of Maryland
Beth Brainard, Hotel Revival
Thomas Poteau, MGM National Harbor
Ben Seidel, Real Hospitality Group

The Executive Committee will remain in place for another term:
Chair – Chuck Chandler, Hampton Inn Columbia-South/SpringHill Suites Columbia
Vice Chair – Katie Doherty, Holiday Inn Gaithersburg

Michael Henningsen named 2019 Ambassador of the Year
Congratulations to Michael Henningsen from Plamondon Hospitality Partners on being named the 2019 MHLA Ambassador of the Year. This award recognizes a member whose efforts have contributed to the Association’s legislative wins, membership growth, and/or successful events in the past year. MHLA Chairman Chuck Chandler stated, “Mike is a great asset to MHLA and an inspiring leader throughout the Marylandhospitality industry. His efforts over the years have been invaluable and it is an honor to present him with this award.”

2019 Scholarship Winners Announced
Three recipients were selected to each receive $1,500 from MHLA to assist with furthering their secondary education and careers in the lodging industry. Congratulations to the following individuals:

Government Affairs
Chip Rogers, President & CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, updated Annual Meeting attendees on high priority national issues and the importance of membership at both the state and national levels. MHLA’s lobbying team also updated the group on recently passed local legislation and previewed what the industry will face in the future.  If you missed it, go to “Legislation & Compliance Updates” under the Members tab at www.MDLodging.org to view the 2019 Maryland General Assembly Legislative Report . Anti-Human Trafficking Training coming soon for MHLA Members
Human trafficking is a serious crime and the hotel industry has taken significant steps to increase awareness of the issue and be part of the solution eliminating it.  MHLA has partnered with BEST (Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking) to offer free anti-human trafficking training to members.  This training is sponsored by the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and will be rolled out this summer.  Stay tuned for more details.

Registration for the 2018 MHLA Annual Golf Tournament will open soon! Mark your calendar and plan to join your friends and industry colleagues out on the course for a great day of contests, prizes and networking.

A portion of proceeds raised from the MHLA Golf Tournament fund scholarships for employees at Maryland hotels.  You can be a part of increasing funds for the future by supporting this event.

Additional Industry News
On May 23, 2019 the Baltimore County Council approved an increase in the County hotel tax from 8% to 9.5%.  The tax will also apply to short-term rentals.  Read More: Baltimore Sun
