MARYLAND COURT RULES ON RELEASE OF HOTEL SALES AND USE TAX RETURNS
The Maryland Tax Court recently ordered the Maryland Comptroller to produce all sales and use tax returns filed between March 1, 2003 and April 30, 2011 from hotels who used Travelocity to facilitate reservations during the same time frame. The Comptroller has filed an appeal to this order.
MARYLAND UNEMPLOYMENT DROPS SLIGHTLY BASED ON MORE GOVERNMENT JOBS
The addition of 3,300 government jobs offset the loss of 500 private-sector jobs in September 2014 and resulted in a 6.3% state unemployment rate for the month. That rate is down from 6.4% in August 2014 and 6.5% in September 2013. The state rate for last month is still higher that the national rate of 5.9%.
BAN THE BOX BILL IS MOVING IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY COUNCIL
The local bill prohibits employers from using a check box on job applications for applicants to disclose a criminal record and prohibits questions about a criminal history until a conditional job offer has been made. The bill is very likely to pass and follows approval of a similar measure in Baltimore City.
MANDATED SICK LEAVE UNDER CONSIDERATION IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
The County Council will hold an informal work session and discussion on a local ordinance on this issue on October 30 at 9:30 AM. Earlier this year, state legislation on this issue was introduced in the General Assembly but the Senate and House bills were not reported from Committee following public hearings.
