MH&LA Update – November 11, 2014

KEY SUPPORTERS OF STATE TOURISM PROMOTION FUNDING LOSE RE ELECTION BIDS The full impact of the loss of Norm Conway, Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and John Bohanan, Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Sub Committee on Education and Economic Development remains to be seen but both were solid supporters of state funding for tourism promotion. STATE HOTEL SWIMMING POOLS AND SPAS REGULATION REVISIONS UPDATE A fourth work session hosted by Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) on a wide range of revisions to the regulations will be held on November 18. MH&LA has been and continues to be involved in this process. Details on the work session outcomes will follow ASAP. STATE CASINO REVENUE IS UP AGAIN SLIGHTLY BUT NOT AT EACH CASINO Total state casino revenue was $86.8 million last month, breaking September's record of $82.4 million. Revenue at Horseshoe Casino Baltimore was unchanged, down 3.0% at Maryland Live!, down 11.1% at Hollywood Casino Perryville, down 2.7% at Ocean Downs and up 11.2% at Rocky Gap. BALTIMORE AS A DESTINATION GETS POSITIVE MEDIA RECOGNITION Conde Nast Traveler has included Baltimore on their "Top Ten Travel List" based on the microbrew scene, dining, cultural attractions, arts, festivals, nightlife, dining and unique events. This recognition follows Fodor's Travel recent naming of Baltimore as one of the top waterfront cities in the world.
