MH&LA Update – March 4, 2014

STATE LEGISLATION INTRODUCED ON CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS IN HOTELS The legislation resulted from a recent incident where a leak in a hotel laundry room resulted in eight employees and one guest needing medical treatment. MH&LA has been and continues to work with the bill sponsor to ensure the best possible bill is considered in the General Assembly. BED BUG LEGISLATION UPDATE MH&LA continues to work with the sponsor of legislation requiring lodging property owners with evidence of past or current bed bugs to contract with a licensed pest management professional for reasonable mediation measures. The primary focus is how exactly to define "reasonable mediation measures." GENERAL ASSEMBLY WORK SESSIONS HELD ON MINIMUM WAGE BILLS The Senate Finance Committee and the House Economic Matters Committee held work sessions last week to further discuss the amount of an increase, increasing the tip wage, local minimum wage ordinances, automatic future increases and expansion of the state earned income tax credit. MH&LA COMMENDS WORCESTER SCHOOL BOARD ON POST LABOR DAY SCHOOL START The statement, which was sent to the media statewide, noted that the Board decision reflected an understanding that relatively minor adjustments to public school calendars are feasible and can be made with an expectation there will not be negative impacts on the academic performance of students. MH&LA POST LABOR DAY SCHOOL START STATEMENT HAS BROAD SUPPORT The statement included the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, Maryland Tourism Council, Maryland Farm Bureau, Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, Ocean City Hotel - Motel - Restaurant Association, Maryland Campgrounds Association, Worcester County Tourism and Six Flags America.
