MARYLAND JOB NUMBERS ARE UP AFTER THEY WERE DOWN MORE THAN REPORTED

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that Maryland employers added 7,700 jobs in June, with the largest gain in tourism related industries. The Department has also revised their May report with the adjusted numbers showing a loss of 6,800 jobs rather than the previous report of a loss of 1,300 jobs.

NATIONAL HARBOR CASINO UPDATE

The Prince George’s County Council has granted final approval to MGM Resorts International to start construction at National Harbor. Their casino will have 3,600 slot machines, 140 gambling tables, a 300-room hotel, restaurants, concert theater and high-end shopping. All are projected to open in July 2016.

BALTIMORE TO HOST NAACP CONVENTION

The NAACP ‘s annual national convention will be held in Baltimore in 2016. Details on the dates, projected attendance and projected economic impact are not yet available. The NAACP, which is also headquartered in Baltimore, is the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the United States.

BWI THURGOOD MARSHALL AIRPORT IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE

The latest project will result in six new international gates to accommodate international travelers whose numbers have grown 15% over the last 12 months. Even more international flyers are expected over the next five years, as Southwest Airlines continues to expand their overseas flights to and from BWI.
