TOURISM DAY IN ANNAPOLIS IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 31 This free grassroots advocacy event is a great opportunity for tourism industry professionals from across Maryland to meet with state legislators and share the positive impact of tourism on Maryland's economy. To register or for more details on sponsorships go to STATE LEGISLATIVE LEADERS FLOAT IDEA OF HIGHER AND TIERED MINIMUM WAGES Legislation to increase the state minimum wage rate is likely to be the "primary issue" the General Assembly will consider this year. Ideas currently under discussion include an increase in the statewide minimum to $8.25 per hour and allowing counties with "high costs of living" to increase it even further. MGM GETS APPROVAL FOR NATIONAL HARBOR CASINO MGM Resorts International plans for Maryland's 6th and final casino include a casino with 3,600 slot machines and 140 gaming tables, as well as a 300 room suite hotel. Pending construction permit and other approvals from Prince George's County, the casino and hotel will open in mid-2016. NEW HOTEL, CONVENTION CENTER AND TRANSIT HUB PROPOSED AT MARYLAND LIVE! The proposal calls for a 70,000 square foot convention center with a 300 room hotel at the casino as well as a new intermodal transit hub with 1,500 parking spaces, ride-sharing programs and bus routes connecting with Fort Meade, BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and nearby MARC/Amtrak train stations.
