MH&LA Update – February 4, 2014

HOUSE AND SENATE COMMITTEE HEARINGS SET FOR MINIMUM WAGE LEGISLATION
The House Economic Matters Committee hearing is February 11 and the Senate Finance Committee hearing is February 13. While General Assembly approval of some increase is certain, there is no consensus yet on the amount of an increase, when it will take effect and automatic future increases.

MH&LA TESTIFIES AGAIN IN SUPPORT OF STATE TOURISM PROMOTION FUNDING
At a recent hearing before a key House subcommittee, MH&LA presented testimony in support of full funding of all elements of the Governor’s proposed FY15 budget that promote travel and tourism and opposing recommendations or efforts to reduce funding for the Maryland Tourism Development Board.

MANY ARE FILED, FEW ARE PASSED BUT ALL ARE REVIEWED
More than 2,500 bills are introduced in the annual 90 day Maryland General Assembly session. MH&LA reviews each and every one to assess their impact on the lodging industry and then aggressively advocates the lodging industry’s position at the appropriate times and places in the legislative arena.

BWI THURGOOD MARSHALL AIRPORT CLOSING IN ON NEW AIRPORT HOTEL
The airport authority will be selecting contractors soon for a new “airport hotel.” The new hotel will not replace the former Four Points by Sheraton that closed late last year. It will be built near the hourly parking lot, a location that will allow guests to walk to and from the terminal.
