MH&LA Update – April 29, 2014

POST LABOR DAY SCHOOL START STUDY TASK FORCE MEETING UPDATE
At the most recent Task Force meeting there was emerging consensus to support some form of a post Labor Day school start in the Task Force's report to the Governor and General Assembly Leadership. MH&LA continues to work with key stakeholders to secure the favorable recommendations in the report.

STATE STRUCTURAL BUDGET DEFICIT PROJECTED TO GROW
The Maryland General Assembly's non partisan Department of Legislative Services projects that Maryland's budget will have a structural deficit of $404 million in fiscal year 2016. This will occur despite the fact that the fiscal year 2015 budget reduced the structural deficit from $506 million to $236 million.

NATIONAL HARBOR CASINO CONSTRUCTION APPROVAL CONTINUES ON FAST TRACK
The Prince George's County Council has formally approved gambling in the county, a development agreement is being finalized, and the County Planning Board has set a public hearing on May 8. All indications point to construction beginning this summer and an opening in July 2016.

COURT RULING COULD RESULT IN COMBINED REPORTING IN MARYLAND
Despite three failed efforts to secure General Assembly approval of combined reporting, the state Court of Appeals recently ruled that two out of state subsidiaries of a Maryland based corporation are subject to Maryland's corporate income tax. MH&LA will continue to monitor the impact of this ruling.

REMINDER -- GOLF OUTING AND FISHING TOURNAMENT WILL BE IN THE FALL
The date for the Golf Outing and Fishing Tournament has been changed to Monday, October 6, 2014.The location has not changed, it will be at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina in Cambridge. More details will follow in future updates and will be posted on the MH&LA website.
