MH&LA Update – April 1, 2014

HARFORD COUNTY MOVES CLOSER TO HAVING A HOTEL OCCUPANCY TAX
If state legislation is approved, as is widely expected, Harford County will soon have authorization to impose a hotel occupancy tax. This new authority will mark the end of an era as Harford County is the only County in Maryland that does not have such a tax.

STATE MINIMUM WAGE LEGISLATION UPDATE
With less than a week remaining in the 2014 General Assembly Session final details are being hammered out on a compromise proposal to increase the state minimum wage. Exactly how much the increase will be and the period of time over which it will be phased in are still to be determined.

CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM LEGISLATION UPDATE
MH&LA has been successful in securing changes to a bill that would have required hard wired carbon monoxide alarms in every hotel guest room effective immediately. The bill now requires plug in or battery powered alarms in each guest room by April, 2015. The bill passed the Senate and is now in the House.
