Gambling Expansion Update
Several Maryland casinos are busy preparing for table games and 24-hour operations anticipating state regulations will be in place in early 2013. Complicating matters somewhat is a lawsuit to clarify if the voter approval in the recent referendum needed a majority of actual voters or a majority of registered voters.

Do Not Count On An Extension On Pool Lift Compliance Deadline
Given the national election results, hoteliers should not expect any extension on the January 31, 2013 deadline for compliance with the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) interpretation of requirements for pool and spa accessibility in the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design.

Current revPAR Forecast Is A Soft Term Softening
A number of hotel executives recently reported weakened revenue per available room growth in the past month, which some attribute to uncertainties over the recent presidential election. In any event executives forecast a continued slowdown in revPAR growth through the first six months of 2013.

Travel Sector Expected To Grow Next Year But At A Slower Pace
The U.S. Travel Association predicts that domestic travel in the U.S. in 2012 will surpass peak levels reached in 2007. USTA forecasts a 1.8% rise in the number of domestic trips over 2011 but growth in the business and leisure segments is expected to slow next year.
